I would like to thank Louisiana and Kentucky for the French donut and the distinctly American spirit, respectively. Without you, this dish of pillowy fried squares of sweet sorcery would have never been possible. Beignets: You can make them from scratch, but Cafe Du Monde conveniently produces a boxed mix. I got to visit the original Café Du Monde location in New Orleans this past summer. After about 3 weeks of inserting myself into my subjects life I was able to create a photo essay. My subject was Yahya McClain former two time cruiser-weight champion, now personal trainer. In having this opportunity I learned that one of the most important things when doing projects like this is building a certain level of comfort with your subject. I am truly grateful to Yahya and the boxers of Absoloot Boxing for opening up to me and allowing me to intrude on their lives for a few weeks. PRIDE 2011

A couple of classmates and myself went down and photographed the Pride Parade a few months back. I have to say I have never felt such a feeling of love and acceptance, being that I have family members and close friends who are gay, and the fact that I was raised never to judge and condemn anyone. Fashion Fantasy

Our final project for our Portraiture II class is a Fashion/Fantasy shoot. Which pretty much consists of shooting on location with a concept that I thought up all by myself. I initially had 3 ideas, but after speaking with my teacher I narrowed it down to what I titled “I am not a human being”. I met a young lady at my job who was a complete free spirit and upon meeting her this idea popped into my head. My first attempt shooting I had everything planned I rented a battery pack hired a makeup artist and had plenty of help. Then of course what happens you have planned everything down to the minute.. something goes wrong, we didn’t have light for the makeup artist so I had to use my strobes and battery pack so she could see what she was doing, which of course drained my battery and I had to have my husband go sit across the street for about 30 mins to re-charge my power pack. Needless to say I had to reshoot, not saying that what I did the first time was horrible I just hadn’t nailed the shot. Either way below you will see my favorites from the shoot. Overall it was a great learning experience, I had an a great make-up artist, and team to help as well as a beautiful model..

Photojournalism Seminar Atlanta 2011

During the first week of December myself with a few other classmates had the opportunity to volunteer at the annual Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar. I must say I enjoyed being able to send it on many of the lectures and critiques, a few things that stick out in my memory was the marketing session with Deborah Pang Davis, and understanding the benefits of social media in reference to marketing yourself and your brand. Also understanding that even though I am a student I have a brand and to figure out what it is and how I should market myself. Also having the opportunity to watch a professional editor critique a students photo essay benefited me greatly since at the time I was currently shooting for my final PJ assignment which was an essay. Overall I am grateful for the opportunity to have gone and meet new people from all over the united states, and to be surrounded by creative minds. It is something I plan on participating in next year without a doubt. Should I be offended?

Just after thanksgiving I went shopping with a friend of mine, and while we were browsing the stores, she mentioned that she had scheduled an appointment with a photographer to photograph her family in the spring at the park.. When I initially heard what she was saying my heart sank considering this is a very close friend of mine and to me it seemed like she completely overlooked me even though I just did a small (free) job for her a few weeks prior. I guess your most difficult clientele in this field is and will always be family and friends. Especially if they don’t “get” what you do. They view it as a hobby or something your are just “trying out” because you the “artistic one”. Either way just thought I’d share because in my opinion it sucks to feel like family and friends don’t take me seriously..

Right place at the right time…

About a month ago I was presented with the opportunity to go shoot the Falcons vs the Saints game with one of my instructors. When I was initially asked I actually tried to give it to one of my classmates who I know had been dreaming of an opportunity like this since she was a child. Unforunately when I was offered this chance to go shoot pro on the sidelines of the GA Dome my classmate wasn’t able to be contacted. At that moment I learned a couple of things. First hard work DOES pay off, Second you never know who is watching you, Third in the world of photojournalism when something is offered to you better take it, because if you pass on it, you will be overlooked the next time, and finally sometimes you are just in the RIGHT Place at the right time. I really must say it was an awesome opportunity, and I learned so much just being able to shadow a professional who had done this for years. Below you will see some of my favorite pics, ENJOY!
